World renowned Canadian band “The Musical Box” performs Genesis’ landmark progressive rock concept album “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” at the Pageant on Wednesday, November 2. If you have ever been a Genesis fan but you have never heard of The Musical Box, I invite you to go to www.themusicalbox.net . This is not a Genesis “tribute” band as much as it is a stunning theatrical re-creation of the historic “Lamb” tour from the 70’s. This is the only production authorized and officially licensed by Peter Gabriel and Genesis. It was Peter Gabriel’s swan song with the band and it was full of costume changes and special visual effects as well as some of the most captivating music ever written, and they use the exact original 3 screen slide show from the tour. If you never saw Genesis in their prime, this is the closest you will ever get. It’s like stepping into a musical time machine. Don’t miss this opportunity to see this in a rare intimate setting, as it was MEANT to be seen.

GENESIS

In May 1974, The Selling England by the Pound tour being over, Genesis take in hand their most ambitious project, a concept album.

Many ideas are proposed, including the story of "The Little Prince". But finaly, Peter begins writing a story of a contemporary character which he entitles intitule "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway".

The other musicians set up at Headley Grange to write the music. Sometimes, they improvise on certain themes; "Pharaons going down the Nile" will become "Fly on a windshield" and "The Evil Jam" will become "The Waiting Room".

The album is recorded in Wales in August 74 and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is finaly release on November 18th, 1974. The tour scheduled to start in October in England, was postponed when Steve injures his hand. The first concert is perform at the Chicago Auditorium on November 20th. After only 5 concerts, Peter Gabriel decides to leave the band at the end of the tour.

Even though the tour is a succes, mainly in Europe, Genesis finds that the production is not stable enough to be recorded, so the show is never film.

After more than 100 performances, the last concert of Genesis with Peter Gabriel is held in France, in May 1975.

THE MUSICAL BOX

From the beginning in 1993, it was obvious to The Musical Box that the biggest challenge would be the recreation of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

In February 2000, nearly 2 years after the first request to Genesis and Peter Gabriel, THE MUSICAL BOX receives confirmation that a licence for the provinces of Quebec and Ontario in Canada will be provided. Never before has any other band obtained these rights.

Most of the documentation is based on more than a 1000 photos and slides. A few Super-8mm private movies including a 13 minutes film take in Liverpool in April 1975, give a better understanding of the choreographies and the general atmosphere.

In June 2000, THE MUSICAL BOX receives a copy of the 1120 slides used in the original Genesis tour. More than a month is recessary to put them back in order and locate them in the songs.

Finaly, thanks to Genesis and to people who worked on the original tour, the remaining questions were answered.

For the music and the sound, the same instruments and equipement as the ones used for the album were found. The acquisition of a Micro-Fret 6 string bass and the access to Michael Rutherford double neck has allowed an exact reproduction. Masks, costumes, make-up, accessories, sets, lights, special effects, choreographies and staging of the show are all recreated with meticulous precision. The slipperman alone requires nearly 2 months of work. Each detail being scrupulously reproduced by hand. To re-create the Lamia, many models including one real size were necessary.

THE MUSICAL BOX's first presentation of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was performed at the Spectrum in Montreal on October 11th, 2000 more than 25 years after the last performance of Genesis with Peter Gabriel. The story of Rael is told again, for those who wish to heat IT and see IT.
